This was done to minimize the need of having properly matched arrow spine. Please remember that if you're doing thumb draw, that you should also practice the followhtrough method of khatra, which tries to remove the bow from the line of the arrow's path. So the asiatic bow arts are generally more in-line with the human body's movements and capabilities whereas western target shooting prioritized accuracy to the point of making sacrifices in comfort. People need to have more consistent comfortable shots and 'only' hit humans and not get bullseyes. There's a bit more to this whole thing, but I think that should be fine.Īs for thumb draw, It's a significantly more comfortable style as the focus has been it's use in war over target accuracy. If it's too flexible, it will overflex and go in the complete other direction. If the arrow is too stif, it won't flex around the bow and instead just bounce away like a springboard, making it go away from the bow. But this is important because now we know that the arrow has to flex, you need to have a correct level of flex, aka spine. The paradox is just the question of why it happens, not the answer. People have mistakenly called this phenomenon archer's paradox as well. As it flies, it flexes in the air while the point and the nock fly 'straight'. The arrow shaft needs to be flexible so that as it's forced past the bow, it bends around the bow. The paradox here is how does the arrow fly straight despite the fact that the arrow is not really pointing at the target.

It's impossible to do otherwise because the bow is literally in the way and pushes the arrow towards the side.
